The swimmer may be at a pivotal point in their swimming journey, and these 3 awards can be used as an Introduction to lifeguarding
Watch me retrieve, is designed to cover the basic knowledge and an Introduction to lifeguarding with the safety of others with-in the pool environment. Retrieve is where the swimmer has to retrieve an object from water up to the depth of 1.5m before returning it to the side. They must show they have the ability to locate the object/s underwater, swim out to the object and surface dive to retrieve it. Swimmers must have a knowledge of the safety aids available and people available on the poolside and in public, with an understanding of how to keep themselves safe and also help the person in need.
We suggest the object be weighted and goggles not used to simulate a rescue. The swimmer must also have the knowledge of how to safely return the object to the side as well as knowing safe areas to return too. The difficulty of this award can be altered to suit your scheme/needs.
There are many bodies of water and all can be dangerous, we advise that the swimmer is aware of the dangers that can be associated with these eg, the sea, rivers, quarries, lakes, back garden swimming pools and even the bath.
