Description
The swimming environment, for many children can be a very daunting one. A large space with lots of new sounds and sensations can be very unnerving. This award is designed to celebrate when children are more relaxed in the swimming pool and able to listen, focus and follow instructions correctly from a teacher.
This for many is a big mile stone as by relaxing and listening enables the children to gain confidence in themselves and helps build a good relationship between swimmer and teacher. It is also a good tool to help refocus children who are over confident, those whose behaviour needs bring in line with what is expected of a class or swimmers who have a tendency to mess about.
Additional needs
Swimmers with additional needs can sometimes really struggle with focusing on the teacher and/or instructions, with so many other things going on around them.
This award understands the difficulties each individual faces and commends the individual for their ongoing attention to their teacher, or their ability to fully perform what is asked without repetition
Lesson ideas
The pool environment can be a dangerous place so the ability to follow instructions off all staff working is important for the safety of the individual and others too.
This award can cover all aspects of being in the pool environment which includes sitting and waiting for your lesson as instructed, correct entries and exits as instructed, performing tasks and activities as requested.
Becoming quiet and listening whilst the teacher gives their instructions . It is a vital certificate for the teacher to use to help individuals who can struggle with waiting, talking whilst the teacher is talking or listening in general.
The swimmer must be shown to take instructions off all staff regardless of their role, this also will show respect for others who work and contribute to their lessons.
Remember to keep instructions short, sharp and concise so they are easy to understand. Use hand actions as well as verbally as the pool area can be noisy and your not always heard clearly.
