DV2
Description
The Ability to hold an unsupported star float shape on their front and/or their back on water surface.
Seen as a step towards personal water safety that if a swimmer gets tired or struggles for breath, they can turn onto their back and maintain an independent, confident, star float position.
We recommend for this award, the swimmer shouldn’t be using any aids to perform. You may adapt this award to your own scheme if you wish to praise a swimmer’s ability to hold this shape independently with aids on. Additionally you may wish to only award this certificate for a star float on their front opposed to being on both front and back.

Lesson ideas
One of the main obstacles to maintain a star float for a period of time is head and body position. Skill development using floats in improving a swimmers overall position in the water, combined with head positioning on backstroke so the swimmer is used to the water being in their ears.
Swimmers often drop their tummies in the water so floating objects can be placed on the swimmers tummy to help them remember/focus to keep their tummy up other wise the object floats away. Again a correct head position can be achieved with a small floating object placed on the swimmers forehead to encourage them to keep their head back.
For the more advanced swimmers, games can be made for them to swim and when the signal is given, to turn onto their backs and float, count to 5 and then continue swimming. This encourages movement in the water, rotation, re-orientation.
