Description

Being able to perform a somersault is the starting point for the swimmer to progress to tumble-turns.  The swimmer must possess the ability to rotate 360′ in the water and return to a standing position.

To gain this award, the swimmer must be able to control their aquatic breathing as well as being able to perform a tucked rotation in the water.

Head must be tucked in as well as legs and the rotation must be of enough speed to propel the swimmer in one movement through the turn. The swimmer can use their arms if required to push through the rotation before returning to a standing position, facing the same direction as they started.

Lesson ideas

Sometimes it is hard for the swimmer to mentally understand what is required of the task. It may be easier to understand if the swimmer is shown by someone who is capable of performing one or comparing the turn to a forward roll in gymnastics.

It is vital you explain that swimmers need to breathe out when they are rotating to prevent water entering them.

Break the stages down into bite size elements, we suggest starting with a simple mushroom float to understand the tuck position, progressing to small bounced to aid momentum to instigate the turn if needed.

Once the swimmer feels confident in the movement, you can add a turn to perform, at given points, whilst the swimmer is completing a width/lengths swim.
