Description

The swimmer needs to be confident in their breathing, correct inhale and exhale timings for the given stroke. This certificate can be awarded for freestyle, butterfly and/or breaststroke.

Freestyle: Development of a rhythm in breathing, the head must turn to the side to inhale and exhale into the water. There must be no pause in arm movements when breathing. Breathing can be bi-lateral or uni-lateral.

Butterfly: Breathing must be to the front and again following a rhythm dictated to by your swim scheme or the swimmers preference. Exhaling into the water.

Breaststroke: Breathing must be to the front and 1 breath every stroke cycle. Exhaling into the water.

Lesson ideas

From a teaching aspect there can be a lot done with float work to build a pattern of exhaling into the water and inhaling above.

Swimmers can practice the frequency of breathing and if they prefer every 2, 3 or 4 arm pulls before they breathe.

It is essential that the swimmer exhales into the water, so watch for delays in arm rotation as this may signify they are not.

This award can be for any stroke where the face enters the water.
