This award is major confidence boost in the swimmers ability to jump off the side into the water unsupported. This award can be given with the use of swimmer aids or not.
The swimmer has to be able to just from the side unsupported into the water and return to the side, a point of safety or a person in the water.
Also available is Jump 2, which is aimed for the more advanced swimmer who have developed their jump entries to include Straddle jump, Pencil jump, Star jump and Tuck.
If a swimmer is uncertain start to build on their confidence with jumping to a woggle or like.
A swimmer will naturally bend their legs and the more their confidence builds the more you can work on a pencil entry.
You can also practice them stepping away from the wall like a soldier and seeing how far down they can go on their entry.
Always make sure the depth of the water is appropriate and safe for the swimmer.
Once a swimmer is confident in jumping in unsupported you can progress this skill to include rotating and returning to the wall.
It is also vital the swimmer waits their turn safely, knows the safe places to jump and why.
