Description

Arms over the water is a huge step forward in the transformation of the swimmers movement into a recognised Freestyle stroke. Their arms have now moved away from an underwater doggy paddle movement, to a consistent arm recovery over the waters surface.

The swimmers development will have gone through some big changes for them to be able to achieve this, their body should now be in the correct horizontal position, head placed into the water at regular intervals, in Freestyle, arms will enter in front of the swimmer and push back past their hips before exiting the water and their face will be in the water for longer periods.

This award can also be given for Backstroke arms, which should now exit the water by the swimmers hips and fully rotate over the water surface, past their ear before entering the water behind their head.

The intensity of this award is governed by your own preferences or requirements. We suggest that this award is given when the arms consistently recover over the water surface but lack the finesse and the finer details of the recovery.

Lesson ideas

As this is more of a technical element/main set point to address, we recommend working on the full stretch of the arm. On the swimmers front with a float, one hand can stretch over the water to touch the float and then pushing through the water to touch their pocket before pushing up to the sky to make a rainbow.

On a swimmers back again with one float held across their chest like a teddy and one arm can practice touching their pocket and making a rainbow over the water before entering.

Once swimmers have established the above you may want to progress forward to developing a more rhythmical arm movement where they blow into the water for 2 or 3 seconds before raising head to breathe.

These new movements can and will take a long time to master so patience is needed
