Ability to place hands on floor and hold legs together vertically out the water.
IM10
Description
This award is about balance, agility and confidence of the swimmer to have the ability to place both their hands on the floor whilst holding their legs together, vertically out the water.
The orientation of the pool will change whilst performing this skill, it is therefore important for the swimmer to learn and know which way they are facing, maintain that direction, as well as being able to control their body actions.
It is at the teachers discretion if the swimmers legs are required to be together or apart. We do suggest though, regardless if legs are together or not, that the legs are straight to be awarded this certificate.
Lesson ideas
Again, being able to produce a handstand is a skill which swimmers find fun at the end of a lesson. The swimmer need to be comfortable underwater, changing their orientation as well as showing the correct use of aquatic breathing. So many skills and games for the swimmer to accomplish and feel confident in before trying a handstand
If a swimmer finds this difficult, you could start with both hands on the floor, body being in a vertical position and the swimmer trying to raising their legs off the floor with knees bent. Progress, as balance develops, into a fully a vertical position. It may be easier for the swimmer to achieve this in shallower water than fully submerged.
If the swimmer is more competent they could perform a handstand, in deeper water, from a surface dive.
Colours displayed may differ slightly from the actual product due to various factors like screen display, lighting, or the way different people perceive colours.
