Learning to swim isn’t just about being able to swim and have confidence in shallow water, but also having the confidence to jump and swim into water that is out the swimmers depth, without aids.
It is vital to learn this ability as a basic life skill. The swimmer may feel different in deeper water and this may make them uncertain to swim, lack in confidence in their ability or to frightened to try. The aim of this award is to help build up the swimmers confidence to swim in all areas of the swimming pool.
In deep water, is therefore a real confidence award to overcome the fear of the deep. A swimmer needs to trust in their ability to perform and swim in water out their depth, things that they can easily perform in shallower water.

Lesson ideas
This is an award that the teacher will need play down the depth of the water. The swimmers need to understand that they need to follow instructions to be safe and the lifeguards need to be alerted.
Lessons can start off in the shallow end and as a group activity kick large floats together to the deep end focusing on what they can see as they travel. One good thing is if the parents are at the deep end then when the swimmers arrive they can waves at them, distracting the swimmer and also giving them a connection that they are doing well.
You may want to start the deeper water experience from a younger age so going to deep water becomes common practice and a sensation they become accustom to.
Starting with aids and progressing to no aids when the swimmer is capable of achieving physically and mentally the tasks in deep water.
