The development of a streamline push off position, on swimmers front and back.
IM1
Description
This award shows the swimmer is competent in producing a streamline push off and holding the position. A perfect way to start a swimmer to focus and control their swimming starts. Completing a competent push and glide will aid the swimmers starts development for competitive starts.
We recommend that this Push and glide award must be achieved on both the swimmers back and front, but it can easily be tailormade to the individual or your scheme and awarded for just achieving it on a swimmers front or back.
Lesson ideas
Streamlining is an essential part of swimming and this award focuses the swimmer on their position and control.
Perfect for an end of lesson skill activity and can be made into a competition of who can hold it the longest or travel the furthest .
Positioning can be addressed of the swimmers positioning on the wall prior to take off and also the actions/movements their body will take throughout.
You may want to start with the swimmer pushing towards yourself to gain confidence and also the swimmer is encouraged to reach a given point – progressing to a swimmer completing the distance on their own.
This skill development can be advanced further for swimmers by asking them to do a push and glide on both their front and/or back and then progressing to include and securing the following:
- Rotate in the water and return to a safe place
- Continue to the other side by just using their legs with their arms by their side
- Continual to the other side with their arms above their head, retaining the streamline position
- After travelling the given distance the swimmer can break out in to full stroke to complete the width/length.
