Submergence is an important and fun skill to acquire in swimming. The swimmer must show the ability to sink all parts of their body below the water level and hold.
This skill can make a fun way to end a lesson and can be a group activity or individual. It can be a trying and hard lesson to submerge for some swimmers who are more naturally buoyant than others.
Sinkers are a great way for swimmers to focus on whilst attempting to move through the water.
Games which involve the teacher shouting parts of the swimmers body that has to touch the pool floor.
Sitting on the pool floor with legs crossed and arms using an upward push to counteract the bodies natural response to float – for a given length of time.
Swimmers can make shapes or pretend to be an animal or like underwater, long enough for others to guess what they are.
For those who struggle in the initial submerging part, they could use the pool steps to help them experience the feeling on being stationary underwater.
