Description
Being relaxed and at ease is the first key step to being in the pool. Once the child relaxes and starts to enjoy themselves they can start to move and enjoy the water so much more.
This award is designed as a confidence award for children who didn’t settle in the water at first. Confidence has now grown to a level that they are more relaxed and have a positive attitude entering and being in the water. If a child is happy in the water the progression and learning becomes easier and more enjoyable.
Additional needs
This celebration of smiles in the water is a key smile stone for any swimmer. Once relaxed and confident, the swimmer will challenge themselves more to continue.
For children with additional needs, there is a significant challenge for them to feel happy and secure in the water. Once happy they will continue to grow in success. This award can also be linked with support and have peer interaction aiding them to feel more confident in the water around others.
Lesson ideas
For a child to be at ease in the water the teacher needs to be enthusiastic, fun and an engaging lesson. Keep your lesson plans changing and focus on all the aspects of swimming over a period of time, so if a swimmers dislikes one aspect they don’t have to do it each week. Gradually building up their overall confidence in the water they are more likely to progress in areas they struggle in or dislike. Keep lessons fun orientated and restrict the time of them so swimmers don’t lose interest or become bored. You want the swimmer to be asking all week when can they go swimming again
Lots of smiles and interaction with each swimmer from the moment they come onto poolside and leave on a positive so they can ‘t wait to come back.
